Meet Managing Partner, David Grant Bostick
David Bostick never intended to pursue a career in the life insurance business, rather - as he puts it - Northwestern Mutual "chose him."
During his senior year at Indiana University, Bostick was recruited by Bob Roberts of the Kochagency in Indianapolis as a financial representative intern."I wasn't looking for a job in the life insurance business; I was planning to go into banking. But once I
interviewed with Bob, I was hooked. "Bob's enthusiasm for the business was incredible," recalled Bostick. "When he interviewed me, his enthusiasm spilled over, and I caught the fever."
It's this "fever" that has motivated Bostick to succeed in his 17-year career with Northwestern Mutual and reached an important milestone when he assumed the role of managing partner for the network office in Fort Worth, Texas.
David Bostick views his new role as an opportunity to give something back to the business. "My goal is to develop an environment to attract talented financial representatives who never want to leave the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. We provide individuals with career opportunities - not just jobs."
Another goal of Bostick's: To make the Fort Worth network office the best possible financial services provider by developing enduring relationships and providing expert guidance. "We're here to serve the community. Our mission is to grow the Northwestern Mutual family both internally and externally."
Achieving lofty goals is something Bostick is passionate about. Under his leadership, the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network - Las Vegas grew into a corporate agency with $2.47 million in premium credit for the 2001-2002 awards year, 51 percent more than the previous awards year. Furthermore, in his 11 years as an active financial representative, he's sold more than 1,200 lives on $1.4 million in premium.
Bostick has also earned numerous awards throughout his career, including the New Agent Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards in 1986, 1987 and 1988; GA Growth Award in 1998-2001; and Pacemaker in 1987 and 1989-1995. In addition, he qualified for the 100 Lives Club in 1988-1992 and 1994; 75 Lives Club in 1987 and 1996; and MDRT in 1993-1996 (qualifying member) and 1992 (provisional member).
What advice does Bostick offer for new financial representatives? "Set daily business goals and follow through with them. If you look at the successful people in this business, they have a habit of doing the hard things that other people won't do."
David Bostick is looking forward to working toward his new business goal. "So far, I've enjoyed a wonderful career with Northwestern Mutual and now, I believe it's my calling to grow the Fort Worth network office."

Career Insight Casey Wright has been a Financial Representative with Northwestern Mutual Financial Network since 2000. Read what he has to say about his career as a financial representative.
I was a student at Baylor University and received my degree in Finance and Marketing. I decided on this career because I could impact the lives of other people and their families through insurance and investment analysis.
The greatest reward of being a Financial Representative is the daily interaction with people to talk about their family, dreams, and goals that they want to see happen, and helping them make them happen.
The greatest challenge of being a Financial Representative is time management and organization. Without these two you are not able to run a successful business.
In the first few years, the biggest challenges were forming the habits I needed to be successful, developing systems, and learning about all of the different products and services that we were able to provide to our clients.
Learning Along the Way
I have learned that I am a patient and persistent person. I also care deeply about the success of families throughout our community. I want to see them achieve the goals and dreams that they want for their family.
This year I had a disability claim on one of my clients and they really were grateful when they received a check that allowed their business to continue and their personal situation not to change.
Career Advice
It is a very difficult career, but it has many rewards that are worth fighting for. I have developed so many friendships through the business with colleagues and clients that will last a lifetime.
When someone tells me how much they appreciate my help in taking the time to work with them – that is why I get up every day and do what I do. Making a difference in people’s lives is what it is all about.
As long as you look at every situation and ask yourself, would I do this for myself, and the answer is yes, then you are doing the right thing. In this career you have a personal responsibility to your clients to act with integrity and honesty. I have been at Northwestern Mutual for over five years and I look forward to reaching the 10 year mark and beyond.
I think the training, processes, mutuality, integrity, honesty, and family-oriented culture surrounding the Northwestern Mutual all distinguish our company above the rest.

The ambition of the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network Internship program has been less to sell our financial products than to develop people. As a Financial Representative College Intern, you will enjoy the benefit of working with The Bostick Financial Group where you''ll receive outstanding guidance, superior support and quality expertise.
As full-time college students, interns generally work 15 to 20 hours per week developing business- and client-building skills. In most ways, our interns follow the same process for establishing their careers as our Financial Representatives.
Our internship offers you invaluable business experience that you will take with you far into your career. But that''s just the start of the impact this can have on your future and your present.
Consider these benefits:
Practical guidance in your career selection process
The chance to develop your networking and business relationship skills
Flexible work schedule
Securities license, state licenses for life, health and accident insurance opportunities and a head start program for a career as a full-time Financial Representative
Compensation in the same manner as a full-time Financial Representative.
Actual business experience for your resume.
Test drive the Financial Representative career.
Regardless of what you do after graduation, you''ll have a foundation of skills and knowledge to build your career upon. One out of three former interns becomes a full-time Financial Representative upon graduation. These graduates have built a solid foundation for immediate and future career success.
The two-thirds who choose other career paths benefit as well. They launch their career with stronger business-building skills and a clearer sense of where they want their career to take them.
After completing the internship, the knowledge you have gained, coupled with the opportunity to work for The Bostick Financial Group as a full-time Financial Representative, can lead you to a profitable and fulfilling future.
